This Thursday: Adobe is in the house! And they're showing Acrobat Professional

UPDATE: Find out how things went by reading the Meeting Recap.

This Thursday: Adobe is in the house! And they're showing Acrobat Professional

Adobe's Acrobat has been in the news a lot lately and for some bizarre reasons. Last week it was the whole Facebook and their redaction problem. On the same day, Rush Limbaugh ranted on-air that Democrats were hiding information in the stimulus bill by preventing search inside the published PDF.

Sigh. Good times, good times.

So, how wonderfully timely is this week's meeting of the Adobe User Group of Atlanta? I mean, seriously. We are featuring the Adobe Acrobat Professional product for the first time in our history! And some of our friends from Adobe will be doing the presentation. And these guys are good. No doubt that the Facebook lawyers and Mr. Limbaugh wished we had scheduled this meeting earlier this year. In fact, one of the topics at Thursday night's meeting is "Securing Your Intellectual Property", so you can learn what some in the legal profession don't know (and perhaps Rush would be interested in the "I didn't know Acrobat could do that!" topic, but it might actually be too advanced for him).

Please come and show Adobe some love.

WHAT: Adobe User Group of Atlanta February 2009 Meeting
WHEN: Thursday, February 19, 2009 starting at 7PM
WHO: Adobe's Ann Fracas and Phil Lee
WHERE: Roundbox Global (directions [PDF], Google Maps)
RSVP: link

Thursday Night: Photoshop with Jim DiVitale

Most of our local Photoshop artists, designers and photographers enjoy it when Jim DiVitale presents at the Adobe User Group of Atlanta (Tomorrow night, Thursday, January 22, 2009).

But why is that?

Could it be that he has a great deal of experience? He's been a commercial advertising photographer for 28 years and has a long list of certifications and degrees.

Could it be that he is a great Photoshop presenter? He's been touring around the country presenting Photoshop and other related Adobe products like Lightroom for years.

Could it be that he continues to give back to the community? On his blog and in a ton of publications.

No. I think that it is because he always presents ways to to reduce time and effort using Photoshop. And he almost always announces every keyboard shortcut while he presents. That is cool.

User Group Overload Ends with Tonight's XD Atlanta User Group Gathering

This week has been totally user group overload for me.

Tuesday we had Ryan Taylor present "Intro to Flash Player 10 and Pixel Bender" at the Adobe Flash Platform User Group of Atlanta. Ryan always wows us with his giant brain full of math. The part of his presentation that I thought was most interesting was his examples of Pixel Bender, the tool kit that lets you (yes, you. It looks like it's that simple) script filters and effects for Flash. Ryan has posted his presentation and demo files on his blog if you want to take a look.

Wednesday had me visiting the Atlanta ColdFusion User Group where I was pummeled by comments "Where the heck have you been?" and "You didn't RSVP!" Mea Culpa, my CF friends, I have been neglecting you badly. But tonight's meeting was a must-see event; John Mason gave us an overview of "BlazeDS for ColdFusion Developers" and he did so without showing a chat example (thanks for taking the high road, John). He replaced the unfortunately stereotypical chat messaging example with the much more pertinent ColdFusion error message widget example. John's presentation will be posted on his labs site.

Tonight should also be fun as Michael Hagel has arranged for the XD Atlanta User Group to have a "Summer Social Gathering" at STATS Atlanta, you know, the place where all the 360Flex parties were held (and the only place you could have seen me during 360Flex because I was too busy at work to attend sessions :-( ). It should be great. By the way, Michael, the site is looking great!

See you there!

360Flex Atlanta + Adobe = Special Event

Yeah, if you live here in Atlanta you should already be attending this event because you're attending 360Flex Atlanta right? It's a great conference focused on your favorite RIA platform? All for only $480.00 (and you get to sleep in your own bed and miss out on those tiny airline seats with no leg room).

Well, if you can't gnaw off the business-hours ankle chain your employer welded to your desk, then here's your chance to mingle with people just like you! 360Flex has invited members of the Atlanta design and development community to a little get-together being held at Stats Sports Bar not far from where 360Flex Atlanta is being held. Yeah, that does mean adult beverages. Yummy.

So come out and see what's up. But you need to RSVP. Get your details here, here or here, but RSVP.

Atanta Stop for the Flex and AIR Pre-release Tour with Adobe's Ben Forta

UPDATED: 2008 - 01 - 18

Flex 3 and AIR are getting close to launch and in preparation, Ben Forta from the Adobe Flex/AIR product team is traveling to select cities to show off the great new features and help prepare us for this exciting launch.

Flex 3 is a feature-packed release, adding new UI components like the advanced datagrid and improved CSS capabilities; powerful tooling additions like refactoring; and extensive testing tools including memory and performance profiling, plus the addition of the automated testing framework to Flex Builder.

Adobe AIR is game-changing in so many ways, extending rich applications to the desktop, enabling access to the local file system, system tray, notifications and much more. Now you can write desktop applications using the same skills that you've been already using to create great web apps including both Flex and AJAX.

Don't miss out on the opportunity to see and hear about this highly anticipated release of Flex 3 and AIR during this special pre-release tour. Plus, in addition to giving away some one of a kind Flex/AIR branded schwag, we will also be raffling off a copy of Flex Builder 3 Professional (pending availability) and a full commercial copy of CS3 Web Premium at this event!

Reminder: Atlanta Stop of the Photoshop CS3 Creativity Tour on October 11

I am linking to a posting at the Adobe User Group of Atlanta about the Photoshop CS3 Creativity Tour that is coming to Atlanta this Thursday, October 11. I just wanted to bump it up here. At last glance they have not reached capacity so register now before the seats are all full.

This tour stop features Bert Monroy, who has written a few books about Photoshop, so the event will be top notch.

Next Week: Illustrator CS 3 at the Adobe User Group of Atlanta

The September meeting of the Adobe User Group of Atlanta is upon us: Thursday, September 27 at 7:00 PM. This month's meeting features Dee Sadler giving us an much needed overview of the new features in Illustrator CS 3. Twenty people have already registered for this event, so if you have not registered, please do so now.

I say that this overview is much needed because we have had a difficult time finding a local presenter for Illustrator topics. Dee volunteered to do this session using Adobe Acrobat Connect as she lives in Kansas City. I know that there are many people who use Illustrator on a daily basis and we would love to support them with awesome events. If you have ideas about what you would like to see, or who you'd like to see, please add a comment or email me at leif [dot] wells [at] augatlanta [dot] org.
